What Is an abstract?

. An abstract is a brief, formal summary

of a document. It is usually no more

than 200-250 words.

Tips for writing an abstract

" Do not copy from the source. This is

plagiarism.

" Follow the structure of the original.

" Do not add your opinion. (Your opinion

bibliography.)

" Write in complete sentences.

" Write one complete paragraph.

" Make sure the writing is coherent.

"  Use the specific technical language of

the discipline.

" Do not use abbreviations or acronyms

that must be explained.

" Write in third person (Do not use I.)

" Do not use informal language such as

contractions.

" Be concise and specific.

 

How to get started

" Read the article as an active reader.

" Put the article aside and try to write in

your own words from memory.

" Refer to the article as needed.

" While some Web sites don't agree with

me, I think it is acceptable to begin by

writing, "This study investigates...." or

"This paper describes...."
